An Interview With Halifax Designer, Jenn Leblanc

Sattva has the privilege of working with Jenn Leblanc for our first ever design project. Because we are so excited about this new venture, we thought you might like to get to know her a little better.

Originally from Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Jenn has many years of experience in the fashion industry. She studied knitwear design at FIDM in Los Angeles, and during her five years in the US, worked for a number of design companies, including BCBG Max Azria and Planet Blue. Upon moving back to Canada, Jenn started her own brand Twigg & Feather, which is a valued part of our offering at Sattva Boutique.

What did you dream of doing when you were a little girl?
“This in fact. I used to design clothes with my mom, and sketch all the time. It goes back as far as I can remember, this is exactly what I wanted to do”

How did the idea of Twigg & Feather begin?
“It was the product of us moving around a lot. My husband works in oil and gas, so I wanted something that I could carry with me as we moved. I wanted to work in fashion, but there weren’t a lot of options to work for another design company, so I started my own line.

What motivates you?
“Watching Twigg + Feather grow over the last few years, and just trying to keep the dream in mind and where I want it to go. The feedback from my customers is always inspiring. Hearing back that I put something out there in the market and I hear that people love it, reach for it all the time, or wear everyday, comments like that really inspire me to keep going.”

Which woman do you admire the most?
“I admire all entrepreneurial women. Not necessarily just in the fashion industry, but women that own their own business, whether it be an influencer online, product based, service industry; Women that have grown their own brand over time, and have sustainable business.”

What’s the most important piece of advice you would give to a woman thinking of starting her own business?
“Dig down to think about what makes you happy, brings you joy and inspires you; Not to look outward, but to look inward to find the initial idea. Also, Consistency. Sticking to your core ideas and branding pillars is the most important thing.”

On International Women’s Day, what is the most meaningful message you want to send out to our community about ethical fashion?
“I want to thank them. Ethical fashion pieces are more of an investment, so for them to make the change to that movement is important, and makes an impact on the environment and planet. Lastly, do your research to make sure that you are well informed. If it is important to you, you know what you are buying into.”

“Green”

What’s your favourite thing to eat?

“Our small community”
